The IPP

The Interdepartmental Postgraduate Program (IPP) titled “Environmental Sciences and Education for Sustainability” of the Departments of Early Childhood Education, Medicine, Biological Applications and Technologies, and Primary Education of the University of Ioannina (UoI) – with the Department of Early Childhood Education as the lead department – is composed of a robust and multifaceted team of teaching staff. This team comes from the aforementioned departments as well as other departments of the UoI, such as the Departments of Physics, Chemistry, and Economics. Emphasizing its “interdepartmental” nature, the teaching staff of the postgraduate program belongs to four different departments of the University of Ioannina: the Department of Medicine, the Department of Biological Applications and Technologies, the Department of Primary Education, and the Department of Early Childhood Education.

The teaching staff consists of highly experienced (senior) researchers who are widely recognized and have a strong presence in their respective fields of research. Several members of the staff also hold administrative positions at the University of Ioannina. For example, Ms. Mpatistatou, the Rector of the University of Ioannina; Mr. Leonardos, the Vice-Rector of the University of Ioannina; Ms. Plakitsi, a member of the Governing Council of the University; and Mr. Maragos, the President of the Department of Biological Applications and Technologies. The distinguished teaching staff of the Postgraduate Program has the capacity to attract funding and research projects, thereby enhancing the presence of the University of Ioannina and Greece in the international academic community.

Finally, it is worth noting that American researchers also participate in the Postgraduate Program, promoting international field research and further developing research relationships and collaborations abroad. Additionally, the program provides the opportunity for the exchange of best practices between international university institutions and Greek universities.

Mr. Ioannis Leonardos, a faculty member of the Department of Biological Applications and Technologies (BET), has an h-index of 34 and an i10-index of 69 on Google Scholar, and an h-index of 29 on Scopus. His teaching experience includes courses such as Zoology, Ichthyology, Aquaculture, Limnology, and Marine Biology in the BET department. Additionally, he teaches and coordinates courses in Interdepartmental Postgraduate Programs (IPP) such as Agrochemistry and Organic Farming, Environmental Sciences, and Education for Sustainability. In the Interdepartmental IPP titled “Environmental Sciences and Education for Sustainability,” which involves the Departments of Early Childhood Education, Chemistry, Physics, BET, Medicine, Economics, and Primary Education at the University of Ioannina (with the Early Childhood Education Department as the supervising department), Mr. Leonardos teaches the courses “Water / Flora and Environment / Environmental Pollution” and “Water / Fauna and Environment / Environmental Pollution.” He also participates in the compulsory research courses “Research Methodology I,” “Research Methodology II,” “Research Design,” and “Thesis.”

Mr. Petros Maragos, a faculty member of the Department of Biological Applications and Technologies (BET), has an h-index of 17 and an i10-index of 19 on Google Scholar, and an h-index of 16 on Scopus. He is responsible for and exclusively organizes and teaches the courses Cell Biology, Developmental Biology, Reproductive Biology, and Assisted Reproduction. He also participates in the Interinstitutional, Interdepartmental Postgraduate Program “Molecular Cell Biology and Biotechnology” and the Interdepartmental Postgraduate Program “Environmental Sciences and Education for Sustainability,” where he teaches the course “Structures and Functions of the Cell at the Molecular Level.” Additionally, he participates in the compulsory research courses “Research Methodology I,” “Research Methodology II,” “Research Design,” and “Thesis.”

Ms. Vasiliki Kati, a faculty member of the Department of Biological Applications and Technologies (BET), has an h-index of 31 and an i10-index of 54 on Google Scholar, and an h-index of 25 on Scopus. In the BET department, she teaches courses on Biodiversity and Climate Change, Conservation Biology in Practice, and Field Ecology. Additionally, she participates in the Postgraduate Program “Environmental Sciences and Education for Sustainability.” In the Interdepartmental Postgraduate Program titled “Environmental Sciences and Education for Sustainability,” Ms. Kati teaches the course “Interdisciplinary Approaches to the Current State of the Mediterranean – Case Studies (Key Studies)” and participates in the compulsory research courses “Research Methodology I,” “Research Methodology II,” “Research Design,” and “Thesis.”

Ms. Leukothea-Vasiliki Andreou, a faculty member of the Department of Biological Applications and Technologies (BET), has an h-index of 7 and an i10-index of 4 on Google Scholar, and an h-index of 5 on Scopus. She teaches Academic English for Bioscientists (in English), Biology Teaching Design (in English), and Cognitive Neuroscience (in English) in the BET department. Additionally, she teaches English Terminology (also in English) in the Department of Chemistry, the Department of History & Archaeology, and the Department of Speech and Language Therapy. In the Postgraduate Program “Environmental Sciences and Education for Sustainability,” Ms. Andreou teaches the course “Participatory Methods in Sustainable Management of Natural Resources and Citizen Education” and participates in the compulsory research course “Thesis.”

Ms. Anna Mpatistatou, a faculty member of the Department of Medicine, has an h-index of 45 and an i10-index of 143 on Google Scholar, and an h-index of 37 on Scopus. Her area of expertise is Pathology. In the Interdepartmental Postgraduate Program titled “Environmental Sciences and Education for Sustainability,” Ms. Mpatistatou teaches the courses “Microbiome and Disease” and “Chromosomal Alterations and Environmental Pollution” and participates in the compulsory research courses “Research Methodology I,” “Research Methodology II,” “Research Design,” and “Thesis.”

Ms. Marika Syrrou, a faculty member of the Department of Medicine, has an h-index of 27 and an i10-index of 48 on Google Scholar, and an h-index of 22 on Scopus. In the Department of Medicine, she teaches Biology I & II, Introduction to Genetics, and Human Genetics – Medical Genetics (also in the BET department). She also participates in the Postgraduate Programs “Environmental Sciences and Education for Sustainability,” “Basic Biomedical Sciences,” and “Biotechnology.” In the Interdepartmental Postgraduate Program titled “Environmental Sciences and Education for Sustainability,” Ms. Syrrou teaches the courses “Microbiome and Disease” and “Chromosomal Alterations and Environmental Pollution” and participates in the compulsory research courses “Research Methodology I,” “Research Methodology II,” “Research Design,” and “Thesis.”

Ms. Evangelia Dzhani, a faculty member of the Department of Medicine, has an h-index of 45 and an i10-index of 88 on Google Scholar, and an h-index of 43 on Scopus. Her area of expertise is Hygiene with a particular emphasis on Epidemiology. In the Interdepartmental Postgraduate Program titled “Environmental Sciences and Education for Sustainability,” Ms. Dzhani participates in the compulsory research courses “Research Methodology I,” “Research Methodology II,” “Research Design,” and “Thesis.”

Mr. Ioannis Georgiou, a faculty member of the Department of Medicine, has an h-index of 49 and an i10-index of 158 on Google Scholar, and an h-index of 39 on Scopus. He is responsible for the course “Medical Genetics in Clinical Practice” in the Department of Medicine. In the Interdepartmental Postgraduate Program titled “Environmental Sciences and Education for Sustainability,” Mr. Georgiou teaches the courses “Microbiome and Disease” and “Chromosomal Alterations and Environmental Pollution” and participates in the compulsory research courses “Research Methodology I,” “Research Methodology II,” “Research Design,” and “Thesis.”

Ms. Katerina Plakitsi, a faculty member of the Department of Early Childhood Education (PTN), has an h-index of 10 and an i10-index of 12 on Google Scholar, and an h-index of 5 on Scopus. She participates in the Postgraduate Program “Environmental Sciences and Education for Sustainability,” where she teaches the courses “Sustainability and Education,” “Environmental Issues and Teaching Methods,” and “Participatory Methods in Sustainable Management of Natural Resources and Citizen Education.” She also participates in the compulsory research courses “Research Data Processing,” “Research Methodology I,” “Research Methodology II,” “Research Design,” and “Thesis.”

Ms. Athina-Christina Kornelaki, a faculty member of the Department of Early Childhood Education (PTN), has an h-index of 3 and an i10-index of 1 on Google Scholar. Her area of expertise is Formal and Non-Formal Education in Kindergarten with an emphasis on Natural Sciences. She teaches courses on Concepts of Science, and non-formal education courses such as “Participatory Methods in Formal and Non-Formal Education of Natural Sciences,” and organizes practical training in city schools. In the Postgraduate Program “Environmental Sciences and Education for Sustainability,” Ms. Kornelaki teaches the course “Participatory Methods in Sustainable Management of Natural Resources and Citizen Education” and participates in the compulsory research courses “Research Methodology I,” “Research Methodology II,” “Research Design,” and “Thesis.”

Ms. Eleni Kolokouri is a faculty member of the Department of Early Childhood Education (PTN), with an h-index of 1 on Scopus. She participates in teaching the courses “Didactics of Science Concepts in Early Childhood Education II” and “Didactics of Natural Science Concepts in Early Childhood Education I and II.” She is also involved in the organization and implementation of student practical training. In the Postgraduate Program “Environmental Sciences and Education for Sustainability,” Ms. Kolokouri teaches the course “Participatory Methods in Sustainable Management of Natural Resources and Citizen Education” and participates in the compulsory research courses “Research Data Processing,” “Research Methodology I,” “Research Methodology II,” “Research Design,” and “Thesis.”

Mr. Vasileios Koutras is a faculty member of the Department of Early Childhood Education (PTN), with an h-index of 11 on Scopus. His area of expertise is Health Education. In the Interdepartmental Postgraduate Program titled “Environmental Sciences and Education for Sustainability,” Mr. Koutras teaches the courses “Sustainability and Education” and “Environmental Issues and Teaching Methods.” He also participates in the compulsory research courses “Research Methodology I,” “Research Methodology II,” “Research Design,” and “Thesis.”

Mr. Apostolos Karaoulas is a faculty member of the Department of Early Childhood Education (PTN) with an area of expertise in the History and Philosophy of Education. In the Postgraduate Program “Environmental Sciences and Education for Sustainability,” Mr. Karaoulas teaches the course “Participatory Methods in Sustainable Management of Natural Resources and Citizen Education” and participates in the compulsory research courses “Research Methodology I,” “Research Methodology II,” “Research Design,” and “Thesis.”

Ms. Polyxeni Pagge, a faculty member of the Department of Early Childhood Education (PTN), has an h-index of 23 and an i10-index of 51 on Google Scholar, and an h-index of 12 on Scopus. Her area of expertise is Computer Science and Applied Mathematics with an emphasis on educational programs. In the Postgraduate Program “Environmental Sciences and Education for Sustainability,” Ms. Pagge teaches the course “Green Entrepreneurship” and participates in the compulsory research courses “Research Data Processing,” “Research Methodology I,” “Research Methodology II,” “Research Design,” and “Thesis.”

Mr. Konstantinos Kotsis, a faculty member of the Department of Primary Education, has an h-index of 12 and an i10-index of 15 on Google Scholar, and an h-index of 7 on Scopus. He teaches undergraduate courses such as Didactics of Physics, STEM Education, and Practical Training: Professional Experience in Educational Contexts I and II, as well as postgraduate courses such as Didactics of Natural Sciences and Contemporary Trends in Science Teaching. In the Interdepartmental Postgraduate Program titled “Environmental Sciences and Education for Sustainability,” Mr. Kotsis teaches the course “Concepts of Physics and Environment” and participates in the compulsory research courses “Research Design” and “Thesis.”

Mr. Kostas Gavrilakis, a faculty member of the Department of Primary Education, has an h-index of 7 and an i10-index of 7 on Google Scholar, and an h-index of 4 on Scopus. He teaches undergraduate courses such as Experiential Methods in Environmental Education and Sustainability I and II, Concepts and Issues of Environment and Sustainability, and Environmental Education and Sustainability. He also teaches postgraduate courses on Environmental Issues and Teaching Methods and Designing Environmental Education Programs. In the Interdepartmental Postgraduate Program titled “Environmental Sciences and Education for Sustainability,” Mr. Gavrilakis teaches the course “Designing Environmental Education Programs” and participates in the compulsory research courses “Research Design” and “Thesis.”
